Blue Rock Waterski Ice Breaker Event 2013

Every year, Blue Rock Waterski in Somerset West hosts the Ice Breaker competition – a cable wakeboarding competition focused on the riders' ability to tackle a series of UNIT obstacles. I was really stoked when I was asked to cover the event again this year; it's an amazing day that showcases all of our local cable wakeboarding talent. This year we were blessed with one stunner of a winters day. I was particularly impressed by the level of riding from the female riders, and was particularly stoked to be there to see Melissa Colborne land her first railey! Having been a member at Blue Rock for a few years, I've watched Melissa ride since she was about 13 years old and to see how far she has progressed is amazing. The next event is later this year so be sure to keep an eye on Blue Rock's Facebook Page so that you don't miss it. Here are a few shots from the day.

P.S. A big thanks to Ingrid Owen for lending me her fisheye lens on the day.

Riders, fear not: if you don't see a shot of yourself above, I'll be adding a full gallery to my Facebook Page, so keep an eye out. To purchase prints, please contact me.

[PUBLISHED WORK] Sixty40 Bodyboarding Magazine Issue 18

Very stoked to have three photographs showcased in the most recent issue of Sixty40 Bodyboarding Magazine. For those of you who haven't heard of Sixty40, it's a South African bodyboarding magazine, available online for free. Check it out here

Thanks to William Souter and Wesley Potts for the awesome riding that I was able to capture in these shots.

Life in Liquid

I've been putting in some good time in the water lately in a real effort to improve my confidence and skills behind the lens in the water. Every time I swim out I'm reminded of just how challenging water photography is, and each time I have a renewed sense of awe for guys who do this in bigger surf on a regular basis.  Water photography is scary, exciting, challenging, amazing and totally out of my comfort zone, but I love it. Mastering it is definitely my goal for 2013. A special thanks to my personal lifeguards, Nick & Cameron, who help me through the bigger sets and keep me pushing myself in the water (And who voluntarily go over the falls in a quest to show me that it's really not that bad...thanks guys!). Here are some photographs from the weekend (tips and feedback very welcome!).

You, Me & The Sea

I just had the most magical weekend away. I love to drag people out of bed at 6am to watch the sunrise. Luckily on this trip my fellow travelers were up with me for early morning surf checks & swims. I definitely felt autumn this weekend.

Water Baby

I am completely in love with shooting surf (thank goodness the boyf loves the ocean as much as I do else we'd have a problem). I usually shoot from the land but on this particular day I decided to get amongst the action in the water. Here are my first attempts at some water-based surf photography. I have a new found respect for water photographers... they make it look so easy but it is seriously challenging (and kind of scary when you're new to it). Hoping to get back in the water and try round 2 soon. Thanks to all of these talented surfers (whose names I unfortunately don't yet know) for putting on an awesome display that made my time in the water so much fun.
